Montana Switzer reports on the youth Jan 28th 2007 clinic
Hi, my name is Montana Switzer, I’m 12 years old and I’m looking to get onto the 2008 Youth World Cup Team. On January 20th there was a Youth Clinic for 14 and unders, it was held at the Sternberg’s. When I first arrived I was excited but also very nervous, the first thing my group and I focused on was Showmanship.
Showmanship is my favourite thing to do other than riding of-course.
We were taught by Susie Anderson, first of all we discussed how to get
your horse ready for a Showmanship class then we got one of the horses
there ready for a Showmanship class and then moved on to a couple of
simple patterns. Susie was incredibly kind and welcoming that all my
worries went away. Then once we had finished Showmanship we went to
tack up our horses then we went into the arena (by now my nerves had
come back) and had a ridden lesson with Doug Allen. We started doing
some simple horsemanship patterns and then when Francesca Sternberg
came in we went onto a few more complicated patterns, finishing off
with a back around a corner.
Doug and Francesca were also incredibly kind and welcoming that again
my nerves disappeared, if you did anything wrong or could do something
better they wouldn’t yell at you they’d just inform you about it, after
this day I was ready to go onto the selection clinics the following
weekend, with less nerves too.
