My name is Jessica Sternberg, aged fifteen years, and I currently attend Battle Abbey School in Battle, East Sussex. I plan to stay at this school through sixth form and then hope to attend university to study journalism.
I have been riding for about four years, and so far I have been the lucky recipient of many lessons from my aunt Francesca Sternberg, Sean Pulley, Susie Anderson and Trainers including Jason Grimshaw, Doug Allen and recently assistance from Mary Griggs and Christie Leach.
I have also attended many amazing Clinics, including those given by Guylain and Pierre Ouillet, Paola Donnerini and Debbie Cooper. I have only been competing for two years, but with some success; I was 'Rookie of the Year' in 2005 in Great Britain and have won the Youth All-round at a show in Belgium.
I have been involved with Quarter Horses all my life. My mother was always whisking me away to shows around the world and I enjoyed going out to the barn and being around the horses as soon as I could walk. Although I only started riding fairly recently, I would groom and help out with the horses from around the age of eight.
Being selected for the 'Team' was so amazing, arid even though the journey leading up to the Youth World Cup will be challenging and require a lot of commitment, it has already been extremely enjoyable and rewarding. The opportunities ahead are wonderful and I am really hoping to benefit from them as much as possible and repay all those who have supported me, by riding and learning to the very best of my ability.
At present, I am riding one of my mother's horses, 'Sail A Rey'. "Sailor" is a 1996 sorrel mare by 'Mr Solano Rey' and was bred by Sterling Quarter Horses, and she has enjoyed the same home for all ofher life.
In the shows I have been to, I have shown "Sailor" predominantly, but I have also competed on 'Big League Yankee' and 'Twisting Doc', two more of my mother's horses, that have taught me a lot in the show ring and most of it good! I hope to continue competing successfully on "Sailor" as she is a wonderful horse, though bred to be a Reiner, she has patiently carried me through classes ranging from Showmanship to Trail and we have even won a few Pleasure classes.
In the future I would like to continue riding competitively and I am always striving to improve my riding skills. I would like to take a gap year before studying journalism at university and in this gap year I plan to train with as many people as possible in order to better my riding ability.
I believe that I will continue to ride for as long as I am able, and I feel so lucky to have found a sport that I can enjoy, and that offers me so many opportunities to compete and improve. I hope that the Youth World Cup will be the first of many achievements that I can lodk back on with pride and fond memories!
