Frequently referred to as “America’s Horse” the American Quarter Horse earned its reputation as a racing horse in colonial America and as a cattle horse in America’s westward movement. Today, whilst continuing to excel in both of those roles, the American Quarter Horse also excels in equestrian events ranging from polo to jumping and from western pleasure classes to the FEI western discipline of Reining.

What is the American Quarter Horse?
He's half a ton of poised and controlled energy, held on an easy rein and a hair trigger. He's a workin' man who can earn his keep on the range all week - and be a handsome dandy at the track on Sunday afternoon. He's proud when he stands, looks lazy when he walks, but when he runs he can whip the tears from the corners of your eyes and plaster your hat brim against the crown. He's big in the haunches, supple in the withers, stout in the neck and wide across the chest... to hold his great heart. He's cow-smart and brave... though sometimes a clown,  to the man with the sky in his eye and mud on his boots the Quarter Horse is a faithful hand... and a friend.

 History of Western RidingTo be suitable for western riding a horse must have a quiet reliable temperament. It must be able to react immediately and responsively to it's riders instructions. Any horse possessing these qualities will respond positively to western riding techniques.
Around the world many breeds are extensively trained and used in the western style. In Britain Arabs and Cobs are frequently used and the traditional western breeds of Paints and Appaloosas are firmly established. However, if there is one breed of horse to be classified as the most popular then it is the American Quarter Horse.
