Tuesday 6th July - From Rob Dalton
I'm sitting here in my hotel room thinking about what to write about for
todays blog and thought I would start with the weather. It has been
fantastic today with temperatures in the mid 90's and plenty of sun to
match, what I gather, you've been getting at home. Then the thunder and
lightning started and the heavens opened so I stopped typing and went
down to partake in happy hour!
Some hours later I'm back to report on
today's World Cup activities. Today has been another clinic day starting
with trail. Chloe had her first taste of World Cup clinics taking Carlos
around the course which is to feature in the first trail competition. Both
came through unscathed and a lot more confident for it. By the way, we have
discovered that Carlos is, thankfully, alive and well but doesn't have
an AQHA competition record.
Hunt seat equitation followed with Jessica
being singled out as guinea pig to demonstrate to the other pupils the
correct position required for the class. She followed that with an excellent
execution of the pattern.
A useful day
was completed with a games night in the arena which was enjoyed by all. The
UK team have been mixing very well with the other nationalities and making
or renewing aquaintances from around the world.
The parents have had a
chance to be distracted from the World Cup activities by the Battle in the
Saddle which is being run
simultaneously in the main arena of the State Fair
Ground. Some of the best reiners in the US are competing this week for a
place on the team to represent their country at the World Equestrian
Games.
Tonight, in theory, should see an early night for the team as the real
competition starts early tomorrow with he draw for the cutting taking
place at 0730. Luke is our 'cutter' and we wish him luck for the first
competitive class. Hopefully, I will have good news for tomorrows
update.

Wednesday 7th July - From Rob Dalton
The first day of competition today with Luke representing the UK in the
cutting. The horses were provided this morning and a short pracice run was
allowed for each team before the class started in earnest. Unfortunately,
the UK did not make the top ten under either judge. It was clear that most
countries were pretty proficient at cutting, a discipline we do not practice
at home. In the end, the
honours went to the USA with Reid Kyle taking first under one judge and
second under the other. Reid's parents had hosted the UK team during the
week prior to the World Cup so he was a popular winner.
The team went off to visit the Cowboy Heritage
Centre this afternoon before returning to the State Fairground to finish the
preparation of their horses for the start of the al-round classes.
Tomorrow is going to be hectic with the whole team riding in various
classes with clothing and horse changes to cope with as well. Stay tuned
for the update tomorrow!

Monday 5th July - From Rob Dalton
Here is today's news. Another busy day today at the Youth World Cup in
Oklahoma City. I awoke at 6am and the coaches were already waiting outside
to take the teams to the State Fair Arena. Amazingly all of Team UK made it
on time.
Three clinics took place today. Jessica, Chris and Anthony took
part in the Horsemanship clinic and following a quick clothing change,
Jessica and Chris went straight on to do Hunter Under Saddle. That was
particularly interesting as it is a class not often covered by
clinicians in the UK. Finally, Anthony took part in the Western Riding
clinic.
Chloe finally joined us this afternoon, to give us a
complete team at last , following the annoying distraction of a late school
exam. As I type the team are on their way to Whitewater. Home of death
defying water rides and terrifying free falls. We parents are keeping
our fingers crossed that we have an uninjured UK Team come the
morning.

Sunday 4th July - From Rob Dalton
Day two at Oklahoma City saw the all important draw for horses. Sophie and
Chris did the business for the UK and we think we now have a promising group
of five horses to compete in the main classes. Following the draw the team
were given time to decorate their stalls then an hour and a half during
which, team coach, Patty Campbell, could run her expert eye over horse and
rider combinations and come up with a provisional allocation of classes.
Each event, apart from reining and
cutting, has three riders from each
country and every one of the five horses allocated has to be used in at
least one class.
The afternoon session saw a mass showmanship clinic in the
main arena with some of the best clinicians from all over the USA giving
Jessica, Luke and Chris, and abut fifty other competitors, the benefit of
their knowledge. The humidity here finally gave way to an almighty
thunderstorm late in the afternoon which , unfortunately, curtailed a visit
to a baseball game and 4th of July celebratory fireworks. The damp weather
hasn't dampened the spirit of Team UK, however, and we are looking forward
to another busy day of clinics tomorrow before the first competitive class
on Wednesday.
